At Brother Rice High School, the standards are high for students. Much is expected from Rice students, especially in regards to religious activities. Many Crusaders play vital roles in the religious community at Rice as well as in their respective communities. These students devote immense amounts of time living lives like Edmund Rice by serving their communities in ways many others do not. Senior Ryan Ludwig is one student that has gone well above what he has been asked to do, someone who makes a significant difference in the religious community. Ryan spends much of his time as a member of the Saint Catherine Religious Education program, a peer minister at Brother Rice, a devout attendee and leader of CRHP and Kairos retreats, and a volunteer at the Edmund Rice summer camp.
The religious education program at Saint Catherine of Alexandria relies heavily on its high school and grammar school volunteers to keep the program running efficiently. These volunteers help the student’s maximize their religious experience as well as assist the adult workers and catechists in their duties. Ryan handles much of the office duties, giving the program what it needs to succeed. Ryan was asked why he gives so much of his time to this program and he answered, “I went to CCD for eight years and felt the need to give back to a program that gave so much to me.” Not all people will answer this call of service to give back to their community, but Ryan does.
Another activity in which Ryan demonstrates his leadership qualities is through the Peer Ministry program at Brother Rice. As a peer minister at Rice, Ryan helps organize and perform religious services at Rice such as prayer services and masses. He also volunteers in the Edmund Rice camp, where he, along with other volunteers from the Rice community, provide a free summer camp to children with financial need.
Ryan also participates in multiple retreats for different religious communities, such as the Kairos and CRHP groups. These retreats are just some of the examples of why Ryan lives in the way of Edmund Rice. Ryan explained what was most enjoyable about participating in these retreats: “The friendships and the new people that come into my life. They are a lot of fun. It helps grow my faith and helps me help others.” Ryan has also participated and led the Kairos retreat through Brother Rice. Here, he was able to grow his relationship with God and later assist others in this process.
Ryan is one shining example of how the students at Brother Rice are “crusading” for a better world. He plans to continue his work of helping others through ministry while in college, as well as partaking in community service organizations.
